Additionally, internet providers track our online activity, logging the websites we visit and the content we consume. This data collection raises concerns about privacy and can be used for targeted advertising or even restrict our access to certain content.

Using a VPN hides even this information from your ISP , by shifting the trust you place in your network to a server somewhere else in the world. As a result, the ISP then only sees that you are connected to a VPN and nothing about the activity that you’re passing through it.

Gnoppix Linux

Gnoppix leaves no digital footprint! When you shut down Gnoppix, it disappears from your computer’s memory, leaving absolutely no traces of your activity behind. Without this type of protection, your digital activities can leave behind a surprising amount of information on your computer, even if you take steps to minimize them. Here’s what Gnoppix protects you from:

    • Browsing history: Websites you visit, even in “private browsing” mode, can often leave traces. Gnoppix doesn’t store this information.
    • File activity: When you open a file, the computer creates a record of that action. Even deleted files might leave traces recoverable with special tools. Gnoppix avoids this by never writing to the hard drive.
    • Password vulnerability: Even password managers can leave traces on your computer. Gnoppix doesn’t store your passwords in memory after use.
    • Connection history: All the devices and Wi-Fi networks you connect to can be logged by your computer. Gnoppix keeps no record of these connections.
    • We use industry-standard AES-256 encryption to ensure your communications are completely secure and cannot be intercepted. Your traffic is protected with strong encryption, making it impossible for anyone to eavesdrop on your communications.

Gnoppix DoH

DoH stands for DNS over HTTPS. It’s a protocol that encrypts Domain Name System (DNS) lookups to improve your online privacy and security.
Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

    • Traditional DNS: Traditionally, when you enter a website address (like [invalid URL removed]) in your browser, your computer communicates with a DNS server to translate that address into a numerical IP address (like 123.456.789.10). This communication is typically unencrypted, meaning anyone monitoring your network traffic could potentially see which websites you’re trying to visit.
    • DoH to the rescue: With DoH, the communication between your device and the DNS server is wrapped in an HTTPS connection. HTTPS is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol used for most web traffic. This encryption scrambles the data being exchanged, making it much harder for anyone to eavesdrop and see which websites you’re trying to access.

Benefits of DoH:

    • Enhanced privacy: DoH helps prevent snooping on your DNS traffic, protecting your browsing habits from prying eyes.
    • Improved security: Encryption makes it more difficult for attackers to tamper with DNS responses and redirect you to malicious websites.
    • Potential censorship bypass: In some regions with internet censorship, DoH can be a tool to access blocked websites (although this effectiveness may vary depending on the specific restrictions).

While your ISP might offer DoH (DNS over HTTPS), it doesn’t guarantee complete privacy. They can still potentially see some information about the websites you visit. DNS over TLS (DoT) is another option, but it doesn’t offer the same level of disguise as DoH.

Here’s why DoH is attractive: It uses the HTTPS port, which is already widely used for secure web traffic. This makes it more difficult to distinguish between a website visit and a DNS request, adding a layer of obscurity.

As for ISPs blocking HTTPS traffic, it’s uncommon. Most ISPs wouldn’t block HTTPS entirely, as it would disrupt a large portion of web browsing. However, some might throttle speeds for specific types of HTTPS traffic (like streaming services).
