1.0 What is Gnoppix Linux?
Linux is a family of open-source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released in 1991 by Linus Torvalds, and originally intended as a free alternative to commercial Unix. It is typically packaged as a Linux distribution (or distro for short) which can be installed on a computer’s hard drive or other storage device and used to run various programs.
We’re an open source community project. We depend on your help. After 22 Years using Debian we’ve switched on 1. January 2025 to Arch Linux as our base.
1.1 Why I should not use Gnoppix Linux?
If you’re content with your current operating system, it’s natural to wonder why you’d switch to Gnoppix?
Arch is very fast because it is compiled for the specific hardware it is installed on. In addition, the Arch repositories are huge, and as a rolling release, as long as one keeps it properly updated, one never needs to reinstall. Cons: Pure Arch was very complicated to install and here we come.
Arch Linux is a modern rolling release distribution. That means new kernel and application versions are rolled out to you as soon as they are released. While most other Linux distributions serve you old Linux kernel versions, Arch is quick to provide you the latest kernel. The same goes for software.
No disruptive upgrades: Instead of major, infrequent upgrades that can be time-consuming and potentially risky, rolling releases involve smaller, incremental updates. This makes maintaining your system easier and less disruptive to your workflow.
Early access to new technologies: Rolling releases give you early access to the latest software and technologies, allowing you to experiment and benefit from cutting-edge features sooner. We’ve a LiveCD there is no risk test out new software it wont affect your existing system. Otherwise, some people reported, they’ve used Gnoppix to rescue their Windows installations. 🙂
Greater flexibility: Rolling releases often provide more flexibility in terms of customization and package management, as you can easily install and update individual packages as needed.
Simpler maintenance: The continuous update process in rolling releases can simplify system maintenance, as you don’t need to worry about major upgrade cycles and compatibility issues
Beyond stability, Gnoppix is renowned for its robust privacy and security measures. This is especially important in today’s digital landscape where threats and privacy matter are constantly evolving.
In essence, Gnoppix offers a balance of stability, security, and reliability that’s hard to match. It’s the operating system I trust to handle my daily tasks without causing unnecessary stress and the most importance you have a modern Linux System.
1.2 What architectures does Gnoppix Linux support?
There are 2 major architectures we’re support on the Gnoppix Project
- AMD64
- (arm)
1.3. Can i get the Raspberry Pi 5 (arm-based) images?
It’s is paid work, amu’s Project working on microdevices, since the Gnoppix project has not the hardware to build, we cant provide you for now with contributed work, we need to wait for donations, sponsor or just someone around who wants to help.
1.4 I am a complete GNU/Linux beginner. Should I use Gnoppix Linux?
That’s a great question! We appreciate your interest in Gnoppix. Creating a truly beginner-friendly Linux desktop is a complex challenge, and we’re still actively working to improve the user experience. Our limited resources mean we’re focusing on building a strong foundation, including automated support systems and efficient issue resolution.
Gnoppix is a passion project, not a commercial product. We’re dedicated to making it better, but it requires time and effort. While we’re currently in a stable phase, we have exciting plans for 2025, including a refreshed desktop look and feel. We’re not anymore limited to 1 Desktop. Whether you prefer Gnome, KDE, XFCE or whatever, just install it.
We encourage you to give Gnoppix a try. As a LiveCD, Gnoppix provides a safe environment to experiment. You can freely test, delete, install, and remove packages without affecting your main operating system. Simply reboot, and your system will return to its original state. While we can’t offer a premium version, we do provide over-the-air updates for easy maintenance. Your feedback is invaluable. Please let us know what you like, what you don’t, and what you’d like to see improved. Your input helps shape the future of Gnoppix.
1.5. I really like Gnoppix, except the development team needs to implement feature X
Report it, on discord, email or by the contact form.
1.6 When will the new release be made available
We’re constantly refining Gnoppix to provide the best possible user experience. This includes incorporating improvements into our distribution. Once you install Gnoppix, you’ll benefit from regular updates that keep your system up-to-date and secure without the need for a complete reinstall. This saves you time and hassle.
1.7. Gnoppix needs more developers
It’s true, times have changed, and everyone’s busy.
Indeed, the demands of modern development require significant resources. To ensure Gnoppix continues to thrive, we’ve introduced membership and PRO versions. This approach helps offset the substantial costs associated with maintaining and enhancing the operating system. I’ve personally invested a considerable amount of time and money into Gnoppix, but continued CORE development relies on community support. Rest assured, the core version will always remain free and accessible to everyone.
We believe this model strikes a balance between providing a free, functional operating system and supporting the necessary development efforts.
1.8. Gnoppix CORE and PRO are too much different why?
Since Gnoppix was relaunched in 2021, our dedicated team has spearheaded development. Gnoppix Core, our free version, offers a solid foundation with basic robust privacy features. It’s an ideal platform to assess hardware compatibility before exploring the PRO version.
We warmly welcome contributions from the community. Whether it’s development expertise or resource sponsorship, every contribution brings us closer to a completely free Gnoppix. By reducing reliance on contracted work and sponsored hosting, we can allocate more resources to enhancing the core product.
Your involvement is crucial in shaping the future of Gnoppix. Let’s build a thriving open-source community together.
2.0 What makes Gnoppix unique amongst other distributions?
Gnoppix distinguishes itself with a strong focus on user experience, stability, and privacy, while also offering a clear path for enhanced features and support.
Here are some key differentiators:
- Beginner-friendly: Gnoppix prioritizes ease of use for newcomers to Linux, making it accessible to a wider audience.
- Stability: The distribution is known for its reliability and minimal downtime, ensuring a smooth user experience.
- Privacy: Gnoppix Core includes essential privacy tools to protect user data, addressing a growing concern among users.
- Clear upgrade path: The option to transition from the free Core version to the PRO version offers flexibility for users who require additional features or support.
- Privacy-focused Services: Gnoppix offers a comprehensive suite of privacy-oriented services, including:
- Secure and privacy focused internet with a free VPN service based on modern WireGuard.
- Secure and privacy search engine to protect your search queries
- AI assistant called Copilot to minimize data collection (PRO Version only)
- A lot of AI Tools which help you with your emails or documents (PRO Version only)
- DoH (DNS-over-HTTPS) for encrypted DNS resolution
- Materialious, a privacy-focused alternative to Google Material Design
- Pairdrop, a file-sharing tool that prioritizes security
- Latest OSS uncensored AI modules.
- Our Secure Platform to share text AND Files in a very secure way.
- and and a lot more.
In Gnoppix, you can first test the system to see if your hardware, such as Wi-Fi, is supported? If you like it, then you can install it on your hard drive or, like others do, use it directly from a bootable medium with a persistent folder in which you continuously write your data. The possibilities are indeed unlimited.
I personally use Gnoppix as a replacement for a.e. iPads that are no longer supported by Apple, instead of throwing the device away. This way, you make an important economic AND environmental contribution.
These factors combined create a unique value proposition for Gnoppix, setting it apart from other Linux distributions.
This raises a compelling policy question: Can companies really manage open source projects today? The behavior of companies like Elastic with Elasticsearch and Amazon has been a cause for concern in the past. Similarly, MongoDB’s ambiguous open source stance suggests that some companies treat publicly released code under licenses like the GPL or AGPL as their personal fiefdom, despite the clear terms of the licenses. I have personally observed similar behavior from other companies who release code under open source licenses and yet act as if they retain exclusive control.
In stark contrast, Gnoppix offers a refreshing breath of open source air. We use GPL-compliant packages to ensure absolute freedom, regardless of your background – Asian, American, European, or even a curious raccoon. Modify our software, use it commercially, print it and hang it on your wall – the sky is the limit! We are not bound to profit margins or quarterly reports. This commitment to pure open source is unwavering and we are proud to be supported by high-performing companies that share our vision.
Our independence comes first and we actively encourage everyone to contribute to the project. We believe everyone has something to offer and unique strengths waiting to be shared. Gnoppix is truly a project by people for people.
2.1 I have found an error with package X. What should I do?
Report it.
Absolutely, the biggest mistake in software development when you find an error in a package is not reporting the problem. Ignoring issues can lead to cascading negative consequences:
- Other developers can encounter the same error, wasting their time and effort debugging it.
- The error may remain unfixed, potentially impacting production systems and causing real-world damage.
- The package maintainer loses valuable feedback for improving their software.
- A culture of silence hinders collaboration and learning within the community.
Reporting bugs is crucial for a healthy ecosystem. It provides the opportunity to fix errors, improve software quality, and build trust between developers and maintainers.
Here are some best practices for reporting software bugs:
- Be specific about the error: Describe the bug clearly, including steps to reproduce it and any relevant context.
- Provide logs and code samples: This helps the maintainer understand the issue and fix it efficiently.
- Use the appropriate channels: Most packages have designated bug trackers or forums for reporting issues.
- Be respectful and constructive: Focus on solving the problem rather than assigning blame.
By actively reporting bugs, you contribute to a better development environment for everyone.
2.2 I just installed Package X. How do I start it?
- Typically you can find it from the main menu.
2.3 I installed Gnoppix core, can I upgrade it to Gnoppix PRO?
Yes you can . Try the LiveCD: Start by trying Gnoppix 25 from the LiveCD to see if you like it and if your hardware is compatible. Install it: If you love Gnoppix and want to use it regularly, install it on your hard drive. If you’d like to support the continued development of Gnoppix and gain access to exclusive features, please consider purchasing the PRO version.
Note: The PRO Version is intended to be a temporary offering. If the community successfully takes on the responsibility of maintaining and funding Gnoppix, the PRO version will be discontinued.
However, fear not! You can easily migrate your data using a simple backup and restore process:
- Back up your home folder: This folder contains all your application settings and data. To find it, simply right-click the application icon and select “Show in folder” or browse to its location in your file system.
- Safely store your backup: Copy the backed-up folder to a USB drive or external storage device for safekeeping.
- Install the Pro version: Download and install the Pro version of the application.
- Restore your data: Once the Pro version is installed, locate your home folder again and copy the previously backed-up data into it.
Voila! Your data should now be seamlessly integrated with the Pro version.
Here are some additional tips:
- Close the application before backing up your home folder. This ensures all temporary files are flushed and your data is properly captured.
- Double-check your backup before installing the Pro version. This avoids potential data loss if the backup process malfunctions.
- Consider using dedicated backup software. Several free and paid options offer automated backups and additional features for peace of mind.
We hope this information helps you make a smooth transition to the Pro version!
2.3 I found a PRO Version on a pirate site.
It is fraud, the PRO version only differences you have another repository from where you install the extra packages or access the Gnoppix Service, you will authenticate always with a certificate which you only get as a member.
Furthermore, pirated software lacks essential updates and security patches, making it vulnerable to exploits. This can render your system outdated and incompatible with modern applications and services.
To protect yourself and others, we strongly recommend using only official download channels and repositories. If you encounter any unauthorized distribution of Gnoppix, please report it to us so we can take appropriate actions.
- Potential security risks: You can’t be sure if vulnerabilities like backdoors or hidden malware exist. It’s crucial to prioritize security and avoid anything that raises red flags.
- Limited future viability: Without proper updates, the system will quickly become outdated and potentially incompatible with essential tools and services. Upgradability should be a key factor in your decision.
- Use only official download / repository
- Check always the MD5 sums.
2.4 Why there is a start / stop anonymity AND Tor-Browser installed.
Using the start/stop anonymity
function will route ALL traffic from your computer through the Tor network. This includes everything, not just web browsing. Be aware that this can significantly slow down your internet connection, including any SSH connections to the cloud or other servers.
If you have firewall rules in place on your cloud server, be aware that any connections initiated while anonymity active will show your Tor exit node’s IP address, not your original one. This may cause issues if your firewall rules on your remote server are based on IP addresses.
For more manual control over your anonymity, consider using the Tor Browser instead. It routes only your web traffic through the Tor network, leaving other applications unaffected and potentially unaffected by firewalls.
Crucially, remember to enable DoH (DNS over HTTPS) within your Tor Browser settings. This extra layer of encryption prevents your DNS queries from being intercepted, significantly enhancing your overall online privacy. Without DoH, your anonymity can be compromised, even while using Tor.
2.5 EU – AI and Software Regulations
We understand your concern, but due to recent legislation, we are facing significant challenges in continuing to offer our software within the European Union.
The EU AI Act and the upcoming Liability for Software Products Act impose strict regulations on AI systems, including requirements for risk assessments, transparency, and accountability. These regulations, in our view, stifle innovation and hinder the development of beneficial AI technologies. It is purely censorship, which is against our believe.
We strongly believe in the freedom of information and the right of users to make informed decisions about the AI and software they use. We are committed to providing users with access to powerful and uncensored AI tools, but the current regulatory landscape within the EU makes this increasingly impossible.
The Liability for Software Products Act, which will come into effect next year, 2026, expands liability to include not only the primary software but also its dependencies. This creates significant legal and operational risks for our complex infrastructure and finally to our OSS Project.
Therefore, we are taking steps to migrate our infrastructure outside of the EU to ensure the continued development and availability of our OSS Project.
We are still exploring the legal implications for EU developers and supporters who contribute to this project from outside the EU. The current regulatory landscape is complex and evolving, and there is uncertainty regarding how these laws may be interpreted and enforced in such situations.
We are actively researching these matters and will provide updates as they become available.
It is important to note that these are preliminary concerns, and we do not believe that supporting open-source projects should be considered a threat to ‘EU’ democracy. Finally we do not want you’re marked (from the EU) as a potential terrorist using free software and uncensored AI.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate these challenging regulatory changes.
